I hope you guys have managed to stay warm this week. Second winter hit us hard in Edmonton, which was especially devastating after weeks of incredible spring weather. I had already packed my away my parka. Sorry to everyone that I scoffed at when they kindly told me this would happen. You were right and I was wrong. I will be cold forever.
Anyway, since it's rarely reached any warmer than -20C, I've taken this opportunity to tackle a ton of work this week! I've broken it down by day because charts make everyone feel smarter:
MONDAY: On Monday, I received a package from the nice people at Goatcase, which is a brand-new phone case that sticks to just about anything. It's practically magic and it really upped my selfie game ;)
I put together a little stop-motion video for them to promote on their Instagram page and I'm actually really proud of how it turned out. I am not a film-maker by any standard, but it was important to me to try and create something of quality, and something that I would be proud to share on my social channels as well. Creating stop-motion is actually quite simple if you know how to use a film editing software. I watched this super short tutorial before getting started, and then edited the whole thing in iMovie. I also photographed everything without a tripod or a remote, which is a big no-no if you're looking to take stop motion seriously, but I think in this case it was okay!
TUESDAY: My week had started off with a bang and then flat-lined on Tuesday. I had a long to-do list of things to tackle but ended up getting totally distracted in the afternoon. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, I had completely dismantled my website and was anxiously trying to re-build it. I had been wanting to work on re-doing my site for awhile, but I had not anticipated taking on that project this week. After a few hours, I was knee-deep in frustration so I quit for the night and drank wine instead.
WEDNESDAY: On Wednesday, I came back to work with a newfound motivation. I spent another afternoon finishing off my new website and making sure all of the links worked properly and edited for typos. I am actually super happy with how it turned out in the end.
One of my biggest challenges with what I do is having to combine illustration and skateboarding in one website, and still have it feel like its "me". I also wanted it to be very clear from the homepage who I am and what I do, so that if it's your first time hearing about me, you're not confused or put-off by all of these different links.
This week was actually one of the few times that I've really realized the importance of creating brand identity. Finding a style that is truly recognizable as your own is invaluable as a brand. It was a huge challenge for me in the beginning and continues to challenge me as I grow. I'll be writing a blog post next Friday about it as well, and I think I might have some tips to help you out.
THURSDAY: Thursday was a really calm and relaxing day. I was able to spend some time in the afternoon wood-burning a really neat project. A great friend of mine had purchased a handmade axe from the folks at Camp & City and was looking to have it woodburned with a custom family crest that she had designed for her husband's birthday. I was definitely nervous to do this project- NOT because I am the clumsiest axe-wielder in the world, but because I knew this was a special, one-of-a-kind gift and, well, woodburning is pretty permanent.
I do love how it turned out though, and even had enough courage to add in their family name on the handle, and a little beetle on the bottom:
FRIDAY: Yahoo- that's today! Happy friday, everyone! I have a few custom skateboards and longboards on the go for this afternoon. Then, I plan on packaging up the prize from last week's giveaway (you can congratulate the winner over on my Instagram page!). Afterwards, I'll be picking a winner for the Women's Day contest I held (if you haven't entered that, you should do so ASAP!). THEN, I'm taking myself out to celebrate reaching over 1,000 new followers in just a few weeks!
I hope you all enjoyed reading about my week. Every day is always so much different than the last, so please let me know in the comments if you care to see more posts like this. Don't forget to come back next week when we talk Brand Identity!
